(August 28, 2012) What is it really like to look for a job in 2012? CareerXroads Annual Mystery Job Seeker Report

For 11 years CareerXroads has taken on the role of a mystery job seeker and applied to actual positions at the Fortune 100 Best Companies to Work For. Each year principals, Mark Mehler and Gerry Crispin create a new fictional job seeker, make sure his or her resume includes current in-demand skills and also include a few tongue-in-cheek features to keep things interesting. Past Mystery Job Seekers have included Security Systems Programmer Chris Kringle, Administrative Assistant Ted E. Baer, Environmental Technician Jack Coostow, and the immortal Credit and Collections Supervisor Vinnie Boombotz. Their trials and tribulations have repeatedly highlighted weaknesses in candidate experience.

This year's Mystery Seeker, Charles Brown, was most recently a marketing manager of a major company's Great Pumpkin division. He led profit and loss, website management, and cross-functional teams that drove annual sales of $750 million. The former field goal kicker and pitcher at an East Coast university also held positions for pizza and peanuts divisions, where he developed alliances with industry notables Schroeder and Linus. Earlier in his career, he served as an intern at a Christmas tree farm in Woodstock, N.Y. where he managed other interns, Lucy, Marcie, Pigpen and Peppermint Patty.

The purpose of this somewhat fun assignment? To determine the ease and efficiency that typical job seekers will face when seeking employment. This year good ol' Charlie Brown discovered that too many companies:
  • Provide insufficient information about jobs and their corporate cultures.


  • Fail to make the application process user-friendly by not allowing job seekers to upload information in an easy, logical manner.


  • Besiege candidates with irrelevant questions.


  • Require candidates to take 10 minutes or more to apply for an opening.
