The Dice Report April 2010

(April 13, 2010) A Note from Tom Silver

The stage is set for a sizable growth in resources and investment in the hottest c-word in technology: cybersecurity. Already, professionals with "cyber" on their resume can command a 20 percent salary premium as both the public and private sectors are becoming more aggressive in building their securitytalent pipeline.

In fact, there is such a shortage of experienced cyber experts that workforce planning a decade in advance is common place. One example:

The Air Force Association encourages teenagers to consider security careers with its CyberPatriot competition, which pits teams of high school students against each other as they defend virtual networks. Likewise, as part of the Cybersecurity Act, a federal cyber scholarship-for-service program is under congressional consideration.

Efforts in cybersecurity have been gathering momentum, but they've become white hot in the last 24 months and there is a growing sense of urgency among officials and technology executives. Efforts to plug holes in network protection, keep personal data safe and national security information secure are hampered by a lack of experienced talent. To be sure, professionals are becoming well-versed in the area, and certifi cations like CISSP allow them to demonstrate their skills. But at the end of the day, the pipeline of talent is still being filled with the first generation of technology professionals who have the option to make full careers of cybersecurity.
