Hiring will Outpace Layoffs this Month
(December 07, 2009) More companies expect to add staff compared with one year ago but widespread hiring is not expected, according to the Society for Human Resource Management's latest employment report.
Year over year, employment expectations are up 21.6 percent in the manufacturing sector and 27.9 percent in the services sector.
The Alexandria, Va.-based association surveyed HR professionals at more than 500 manufacturing and 500 private service-sector companies. The two sectors comprise more than 90 percent of America's private sector employment.
A net total 10.7 percent of manufacturing sector companies will add jobs this month, with 28.2 percent of HR professionals saying their company will increase staffing while 17.5 percent will cut jobs.
A net total of 18.8 percent of service sector companies will add jobs this month, with 28 percent planning to hire while 9.2 percent will reduce staffing levels.
Several of those are in Greater Baltimore, as the Baltimore Business Journal details in a package of stories on the prospects for economic recovery, and whether positive signs such as job growth are sustainable.
"Though December 2009 hiring expectations are expected to show a positive gain compared with this time last year, the numbers merely reflect a slowdown in the high volume of layoffs that continued to devastate the U.S. work force last December," said Jennifer Schramm, manager of workplace trends and forecasting at SHRM, in a statement.
