Local Geo-Skills and National Economic Restructuring

(November 25, 2008) Every geographic area has a unique set of geo-skills that drive its local economy. Geo-skills are the most integral part of the workforce and a fundamental asset of the community. They propel local industry, and now is the time to strategically strengthen and situate them in a way that ensures the long-term economic health of the community.

Today, the critical challenge for any community is to fully understand what geo-skills are driving its economy and why each is core to its industry base.

Understanding the local workforce and its unique geo-skills has two immediate benefits.
  • First, by fully understanding its labor strengths and assets, a community will be better prepared to apply them toward local economic restructuring stimulus packages that are being passed down from the federal government, thereby addressing immediate needs that ensure long-term economic growth.

  • Second, by using this understanding to strengthen its current economic base and create a more nimble workforce, the community will be better prepared to do business in the increasingly dynamic global economy.
How a local economy and its workforce is understood and restructured today will directly impact its long-term economic survival in the years ahead. This survival is tied to redefining and bolstering its workforce and industry base by effectively utilizing, building upon, and upgrading its existing core geo-skills.

To ensure that a community's workforce and industry base has the fluidity and ability to find work and provide a livable wage during economic slowdowns, its geo-skills must be developed as transferable assets that:
  • can be effectively and continually used in national economic restructuring;
  • can be applied across key local industries;
  • can assist these industries to change, grow, and advance.

Understanding, strengthening, and transferring a community's geo-skills creates a more limber and viable workforce that can quickly adapt to growth and change, securing a better future for everyone. It is an ongoing economic development strategy that prepares a community for what is to come today and tomorrow. Now is the time to start.
