(January 22, 2008) People coming together on an issue can cause social and legal shifts in the fabric of society.
Martin Luther King Jr.and the American Civil Rights Movement caused intense changes around racism in the 1960s.
The Feminist Movement created a shift in the culture and laws in the late nineteenth century, then in the 1960s and the 1990s.
The Gay Liberartaion Movement has shifted thinking and laws regarding the employment of people with different sexual orientation.
During the 1800s there were efforts to challenge ageism that was focused on improving the work situation of young people. Again in the 60s there were several movements dedicated to promoting the democratic rights of people of all ages. The Grey Panthers sprang up in the 70's working to eliminate ageism in all forms.
Anyone that has worked in an office can tell amazing stories about coworkers. Anyone that has managed an office knows about the difficulty of balancing the rights and needs of those they supervise. A productive and peaceful office is proof that there are great managers and brilliant HR professional filling the company's positions.
There has been progress. This is still much work to do.
Our industry is working to create a safe work environment where employees are excited to work and give their all while on the job.
Perhaps, working to create the opposite of a hostile work environment:
A hostile work environment exists when an employee experiences workplace harassment and fears going to work because of the offensive, intimidating, or oppressive atmosphere generated by the harasser based on race, religion, sex, national origin, age, disability, veteran status, or, in some jurisdictions, sexual orientation, political affiliation, citizenship status, marital status, or personal appearance

We have been following videos recently and came across a series of videos that describe themselves as "gently poking your brain with a stick". They present interesting facts and a very specific slant on social and political topics. It is a very simple format that delivers a fairly expansive discussion.
