(September 19, 2007) Data, data everywhere and no one stops to think.
If you're feeling overwhelmed by the volume of information on your plate, you ain't seen nothin' yet. Information Anxiety is caused by the ever widening gap between what we understand and what we think we should understand. Everyone who tries to keep up with just a few blogs, their financial portfolio, market intelligence and the business pages has a dose of one form or another.
Over the next 18 months to ten years, a series of products will roll out in every aspect of your life and business. These information packages are the industrial byproducts of service providers. Because data collection has become very easy, vendors, who are really drowning in the stuff, will be repackaging and trying to sell or give it to you.
Expect a flurry of customized and customizable reports that describe, quantitatively, the top five this and that. Plan on being able to make your own health care decisions based on real time mortality data from the hospital you are about to enter (that might be mashed into a google map). In Recruiting, the data will get increasingly numeric.
You may want to hire a personal statistician just to make sense of it all.
It's been more than a decade since administrative data about every transaction you make started to accumulate on the web. The current cultural fascination with measurement is finally causing folks to look at the data.
