Summertime Blues
(August 02, 2007) I'm taking
a long slow look at the way the industry has changed over the past
decade. You know the old story about the frog in the pan of water, right?
Even though
it's not literally true, there's a useful bit of truth in the story.
If you don't watch carefully, things happen right under your nose. A
routine can get so comfortable that you miss what's happening.
In the past six months or so, I have been
revisiting the truths I thought applied to our Recruiting Industry. What
is important? Who is important? Which trends are critical? What is the
job of a trench level recruiter and does it vary by setting? What do the
demographics really mean?
There are a couple of great people (Cheezhead
and Russell...kind of sounds
like a cable news team) who are following the blow by blow tactical news
in the industry. There are others who are trying to make it (Davis,
Animal). There are some
attempts to polish up the internet search toolkit into a routine journal
(Shally, of course). Both
Stroud and
Mendoza work tirelessly to
showcase unseen aspects of the industry.
But, in all of this, who is looking out for
the deeper infrastructure? With 300 bloggers, it seems like there are
huge holes in the coverage. Lots of duplication (SEO and SEM are big,
branding and website criticism run second or third). Fortunately, I can
only make so many mistakes so I'm losing prominence as a target for
rotten tomatoes.
There's even a funny new motif running
through the comments around the web. Buried under a lot of rhetoric, it
goes something like this:
#1You're stupid.
#2 No, I'm not.
#1 Yes, you are.
#2 No, I'm not you are
#3 No, he isn't, he's smart
#4 No, he's stupid
#1 No, I'm not.
or the finely honed substitute:
#1 You don't get it
#2 Get what?
#1 It, you numbskull, it
#2 I do, too. You're stupid
#1You're stupid.
#2 No, I'm not.
#1 Yes, you are.
#2 No, I'm not you are
#3 No, he isn't, he's smart
#4 No, he's stupid
#1 No, I'm not.
It reminds me of the old days when Jason
and Animal would have a complex dialog.
