Employee Blogs 1 (June 19, 2007) As an employee, you do not have to behave differently as a private person but you do have to behave differently as a public person. In an era of 24 x 7 communications, you are always an employee at some level. Blackberries and blogs, affectionately known as "the ball and chain", limit the employee's ability to have perfectly free communications as a private person. Email and telephone conversations conducted on company equipment are, more or less, the property and the liability of the company. What's happened is that the definition of the public space has enlarged. With deep customization comes a deep public persona. Transparency, the tough lesson for old school hierarchical organizations, is a double edged sword for individual employees. With deep public accountability and traceability, visible public actions become a reflection on your employer. So, if an employer wants to terminate its relationship with you because of your Myspace page (or blog), it has the right (and the responsibility to stockholders). It's always this way in times of deep social change. Increasing levels of freedom are always accompanied by deepening levels of responsibility. The world of personalized web publishing does more than stretch and modify existing categories, however. It adds nuances where there used to be none. It adds them in a way that ridicules the idea of control while causing the itch that wants to be scratched that way.. The question quickly becomes "Where is the dividing line between public and private?" More tomorrow.
