Ten Principals for Recruiting An Integenerational Workforce from John Sumser.

Recruitosphere, Recruitiny, Recrunity, Recruitile, Recruitopia

(May 17, 2007) It's been about seven weeks since I agreed to be the executive editor of Recruiting.com. Following some hazing by a small number of very vocal players, it's been a quiet time. I've been more or less on the road constantly since then.

As I've traveled, I've been reading the collective writings of Recruiters who blog to the best of my ability. You can see the immediate consequences of that process in the daily "Read Five". These are posts and articles that I found interesting and useful enough to give some additional visibility. In general, one out of ten things I read makes it to the list.

The weird way that the Recruiting.com platform delivers its "Recruiting Blogosphere" (on the right hand side of the page) has been the foundation of my reading and browsing. I can't, for the life of me, figure out how those articles get onto the page. That's okay because the links don't usually point to the article whose title is on the link. They are never the most current blog posts.

Given the degree to which that function is broken, I'm guessing that most visitors to Recruiting.com don't really use it. My experience is that's it's like a magical role of the dice. Who knows what you'll get? It does, however, provide a great starting point for a comprehensive review of the stuff in our little corner of the universe.

I am not finished listening and learning. I do have some initial observations and plans.

  • I'm coming to the conclusion that Recruiting.com is best understood as a place where you can reliably find the best that the "Recruit-o-sphere" (hate the word, looking for a replacement, any ideas?) has to offer. With hundreds of bloggers delivering material on a pretty routine basis, no one could possible sift through it all. As I've noted before, much of it isn't very interesting to most people.

  • The gaming of results in the voting sections is pretty ridiculous. I assume that you've noticed that some (a very, very few) posts get 60 or 70 votes while others (most) get one to ten votes. There are a couple of people who have figured out how to "game" the Recruiting.com system. They don't seem to know or care that their manipulations are obvious and disruptive. These users value clicks over community.

  • In the next week or so, I'll be writing a posting that describes, in great procedural detail, how to hack the Recruiting.com system. I think it's only fair that everyone be allowed to operate in the same way. It's one of those tricky areas of "cyberspace" where something looks like an ethical question but is really a technical issue.

  • In the next couple of weeks, I'm going to start talking about the Recruiting Roadshow. My take is that community has to have both an online and an off line component. So, my initial notion will be to have an opportunity for live community in one city a month, ten months of the year. If you have ideas or suggestions, let me know.

  • There are great voices in our industry who are not being heard from. I want to try to reach out to them and make Recruiting.com more friendly to them. If you have suggestions in this area, let me know.

That's the update for the moment.
