Kennedy Presentation: Adventures In Search Video.

Facebook Classifieds

(May 11, 2007) Yesterday, I sat through a panel presentation called The Electronic Future and Forward-Thinking Recruiting! chaired by Tony Lee of Adiccio. It was the end of a long couple of days at the Kennedy Information Recruiting Conference and Expo. The days were full of old and new friends. Kennedy supplied their usual competent administration.

Somehow, the newspapers managed to sneak a majority vote onto the panel and its construction and Joel was compelled to play along. According to the August group, newspapers are on the way to a new zenith (once Craigslist finally starts charging for postings in all of its markets.)

Funny thing is that at the very same time, Facebook was announcing free classified advertising. Supplementing the already interesting Jobster powered employment advertising, Facebook intends the material as a service to the readership. It's more ways for more people to spend more time on facebook.

Certainly every other social network will follow suit.

According to Techcrunch:

It's a logical add-on for Facebook. MySpace has offered classified services since inception and Friendster recently announced their intention to launch a similar service. The closed network structure of Facebook creates a higher level of trust amongst users than MySpace, with its more wild west approach of open friend lists. Giving Facebook users the ability to sell only to their closed networks also provides a security layer that you don't get with services such as Craiglist.

The newspapers still don't grasp how desperate their situation is. While ownership continues to change hands (because new owners are better suited to milk a cash cow to death), employees, vendors and others are being trained to sing the praises of the old boss. It was more than a little disappointing.
