How To Read

(April 16, 2007)

I must not fear.
Fear is the mind-killer.
Fear is the little-death that brings total obliteration.
I will face my fear.
I will permit it to pass over me and through me.
And when it has gone past I will turn the inner eye to see its path.
Where the fear has gone there will be nothing.
Only I will remain.
(From Dune by Frank Herbert, courtesy of wikipedia)

Ethical bloggers make their organizational affiliations clear. Knowing that bias is the central feature of Web publishing, they assist their readers by clearly defining themselves. Context is a necessary component of reading the Web and the talented folks make the task easy for their audience.

Amitai Givertz is a model thinker, observer and writer of the Recruiting web. His affiliation with his firm is never far from the conversation, either in the flesh or online. Knowing the danger of undisclosed conflicts, Ami carefully and painstakingly experiments with transparency on his side of the fence.

Only a few people (in or out of Recruiting) wrestle this hard with the task of critical thinking. Scan through Ami's writings. You will find a man who struggles to develop himself while trying to discover truth. Ami aims to wrench the maximum from his experience and routinely does so in public. Transparency evolves in his hands and mind as he faces and channels his fear.

This is something we all encounter each day. Calling it stress makes it easier to avoid and somewhat more palatable. Facing fear is the essence of challenge in work and life. There seem to be three approaches; swallowing it, running from it and letting it move through. Only letting it move allows the fear to leave without a residue.

Take a look at Ami's most recent piece, a commentary on the transitions at Recruiting.com. It's the opening salvo in a series of articles describing the evolution and values of the community of Recruiters who write and publish online. With the strength of well honed personal conviction, Ami lays himself on the line as always. The choice to use fear as a navigational aid produces authenticity.  It reaches beyond the screen and engages the reader.

As the subject of Ami's piece, I notice the errors in small details first. Initially, all I could see was that many of them are inaccurate. My fear takes refuge in tiny detail when the bigger picture is a challenge to embrace. Being in the possession of the first hand facts does not make me the inherent expert.

I want to argue with his broad brush strokes. They claim, without documentation, the success and spread of the revolution. They assert the success of a tidal wave of change. They describe a ferry that left on time.

After letting go of my dispute with the details, I realize that Ami's analysis hits the truth gong. That really makes me nervous. He writes of missed opportunity and lost direction of changes and contradictions that are hard to reconcile. Any person with self-generated values and convictions faces these fears on a routine basis. They are the emotional content of any transition. I resonate.

Ami does us all a great service by meeting his fears and letting them pass through. His writing stands well simply because he has rinsed his fears from it. That gives us the opportunity to see past our own fears. Ultimately, he requires that the members of his audience arrive at their own conclusions. He presents substantive information and encourages his readers to think for themselves.

For writers, this sort of emptiness is an important objective. It is very hard to hit 100% of the time. It is extremely critical to try. Clarity, acknowledgment of bias and penetration of fear are the essentials in great blogging.

World Class Marketing Consultant Offers
Free Evaluation of Your Potential for Big Gains

In a free phone session, Ron Richards, President of ResultsLab, will hear your goals then give you a free whirlwind analysis of your site or ads.

Richards named his firm ResultsLab because he has a track record of causing big results and because he uses a continuous improvement testing methodology. Some of his most unique approaches are…

Radical truth and honesty - He builds your positioning, tag line, headlines and other grabbers by discovering a deep truth about you that resets the standard and disqualifies competitors.

But what if your advantages over competitors aren't compelling to prospects - and indeed aren't different enough as a basis for powerful positioning? In that case, Ron recommends changes in your offering, or even your infrastructure, that make a powerful positioning you develop with him become true - one that disqualifies your competitors.

As needed he develops names, tag lines, grabbers, arguments that devastate qualms, and results-multiplying calls to action. He applies these to your site, ads, and emailings.

ResultsLab's approach is different from any other agency or consultant. Read how here.

Call Ron for your free session where he'll listen closely to your goals, flag what's improvable and to what extent, and say some of the specific improvements he envisions.

He's at 415-563-5300, or RonR@ResultsLab.com.

Typical comments from his clients' case stories:
"The highest response we've ever seen after working with lots of famous agencies and consultants,"
"The most successful system I've ever heard of for getting access to top executives,"
"A master builder in all media,"
"the most creative and skillful marketing consultant I've ever had the pleasure to work with,
"finds the hottest arguments and grabbers,"
"demolished the price qualms that had eluded our sales and marketing experts for 10 years."
"Beat our control by 4 fold."
