Anonymity

(April 5, 2007) If there's one thing that's broke in the blog space, it's the anonymity thing. Any monkey with any motive can post comments to most blogs with almost no accountability (Savvy blogsters can see the IP address but only seem to use it defensively and, an IP address tells you little in a big company).

In younger years, I was deeply involved in the WeLL (Whole Earth 'Lectronic Link), an early online community. At the WeLL, a primary value at the heart of the community was the YOYOW (You own your own words) policy. Each member owned the IP and consequences of the language that they chose to use. This was ensured by an active policy prohibiting anonymous postings.

It's amazing how far people will go when they are not held accountable for what they say. By prohibiting or severely limiting anonymity (there may be a place for it in some serious conditions), it is always clear who is saying what. The question of motive, which is impossible to assess in an anonymous posting, becomes relatively clear when people are required to identify themselves.

These days, we skip right over information that is not clearly branded with the author's name. When the name is available, we're still forced to guess whether it is the real author or a funny clone. The lack of identity verification in most blog conversations creates a severe credibility problem.

We're happy to take criticism, in almost any form, from anyone willing to identify themselves. We don't think anyone should have to listen to anonymous hackles.
