Kennedy Presentation: Adventures In Search Video. Presentation from John Sumser, Recruiting Is A Conversation is available for download. Canada's Top 100 (March 29, 2007) Last Thursday and Friday, the Eight Annual Top Employers conference was held in Toronto. Al Gore was lucky enough to share the same stage (pdf) as Peter Weddle and John Sumser. Al presented a live version of "An Inconvenient Truth" Weddle wowed the crowd with stories of mountain climbing and talent wars. Sumser delivered a new take on the recruiting conversation. The conference was interesting because it blended patriotism, environmentalism, sustainability and strong views of recruiting into a seamless web. Al was the first to notice that really isn't anything like it in the states. Peter and I agreed. The two day event is built around what is becoming an institution in Canada. Tony Meehan and Richard Yerema have been developing and improving their book "Canada's Top 100 Employers" for a solid eight years (it's really more like 15). The book is a guide to the perks and benefits of 100 employers on one hand. On the other, it is becoming the driver for the spread of a certain range of benefits and employment practices throughout Canada. By establishing a performance bar, Meehan and Yerema have become the standard setting engine of Canada's comp, benefits and employment practices. Each year, the competition becomes more intense and more revealing. The authors are frank and revealing at the conference. They explain the details of the application process and the things that drive their choices. "It's all about the stories", they said repeatedly during speeches and conversations. They readily acknowledge that there are lots and lots of great employers in Canada. Making it into the Top 100 means being easy to write about. Paying well isn't enough. The place was packed with 600 eager 'delegates' who had forked over $1,995 for 2 days of insight into recruiting and employment practices. One agenda, no split sessions and lots of rapt attention. It was an amazing thing to behold. We think that the conference works well in Canada because they are on top of the war for talent as a nation. We went through immigration on our way into the country. The place was crowded with lots of people speaking lots of languages. The immigration officials were highly educated, compassionate and informative. The cheerful translators were moving from case to case fluidly and quickly. The harshness and angst that characterize American immigration were missing. Canada is really interested in recruiting "New Canadians". They know that the future of their economy depends on it. Their patriotism included welcoming arms for new members of the society. We were jealous. John Sumser © TwoColorHat. All Rights Reserved. Talent is what matters most.
