This week we're focusing on a few really great postings from the last month or
so. Inclusion in this version of Best of The Blogs means that we think the piece
is a well reasoned example from a real talent. That suggests some original
thinking and a break from the rest of the pack. We highly recommend that you

Jason's got the ball
The future has not been written," began Terminator 3. "There is no fate but
what we make for ourselves." It took 12 years to write the script for
Terminator 3, I wonder how long Jason Goldberg has been planning 'Jobster -
meet your future'. I wonder how far his vision goes? (Hire

Study Reveals How Recruiters Can Put The Brakes
On High Trucker Turnover
Recruiting and retaining good truck drivers has
long been a challenge for the trucking industry,
where employee turnover rates average near 30
percent. Yet while
trucking company recruiters and HR teams
have made their recruitment pitches more
attractive and their retention policies more
effective, serious challenges persist. Now, a
new study by management researches at the
University of Arkansas reveals that a
combination of poor working conditions and
lingering pay issues explains why so many
promising truckers put the brakes on their work
for good. (Inside

Public
Sector HCM Challenge
I was at the Gartner HQ today for an
Executive Briefing with a part of one of
U.S. Armed Forces. Given the events of
the day, the conversations outside the
main meeting were interesting. But, I
digress. I was there to talk to them
about HCM best practices and technology.
I found it interesting that they had
many of the same challenges as private
sector organizations. The aging
workforce was a huge deal. They
estimated that 30% of the workforce was
eligible to retire RIGHT NOW (on a full
pension by the way). (BlogERP)
Schrödinger's Cat & The Myth Of Passive Job Seekers
Have you ever read something that doesn't really spark your interest until
you think about it later? Sometimes, then you can't stop thinking about it.
I read a great critique of the popular concept of "passive job seekers"
recently. It was very thought provoking (in a delayed sort of way) and I
wish I could remember where I read it. Following is a summary of that
author's thoughts, as I remember them, with extra commentary by yours truly.
Ever since I first heard about "passive candidates," everything about the
concept has bothered me. The idea itself and the label. Let's start with the
label. At best it is misleading (or, at least, an oxymoron) to apply the
word "passive" to an allegedly superior class of job seeker. (For

craigslist, jobster in 'misunderstanding'
A Jobster client forwarded the following e-mail last night:
We regret to inform you that we have temporarily suspended all job posts to
Craigslist through the Jobster Direct Post feature while we ensure that we
are in compliance with Craiglist's posting policies and procedures. This
suspension applies to both active and future postings. (Cheezhead)
Online Job-hunting for Recruiters, Especially If You Don't Need a Job
To me, The Desk comes across as a recruiting-geared blog. However, I know
Viva has a soft spot for job-seekers (indeed, I once did a live chat for one
of the career networking groups she manages). And the blog's subtitle
references job-seekers. So in discussing with Viva what might be of interest
in my guest post, I offered something for recruiters AS job-seekers. . .(On
