An interesting and important issue associated with reach is monitoring the results of advertising on a variety of job boards. Don Firth, the relentless energy behind a host of niche job boards, has this to offer:

An additional hot issue is the inadequacy of ATSs to accurately measure the source of the candidates. Companies, having spent hundreds of thousands of dollars on a system that has a major sourcing problem, make their job board decisions based on poor information.

Many rely on drop-down boxes, which are highly inefficient. For example, if a friend suggests to a seeker that she searches on Google, which lists a job on TopUSAJobs.com, crossposted from AllRetailJobs.com. The application form goes to a retailer's ATS. The seeker could indicate any of several sources, even though the true posting source was AllRetailJobs.com.

We did a test on AllRetailJobs.com. We created a drop-down box for seekers to fill-in when they applied to jobs they found on AllRetailJobs.com. This gave seekers several options to choose to identify their source. Less than 25% identified AllRetailJobs.com.

As an industry we need a champion to 'encourage' ATS firms to update their systems and introduce a tracking link which will accurately measure the true source.

Not only don't we know where candidates come from, we don't know where they don't come from. The thing about job boards, as we've been saying, is that they are good at reaching the people they are good at reaching. The others, conventionally known as Passive candidates, are not online looking for jobs through job boards. We pointed out, in Rm 4 Imprvmt 4, that job boards reach roughly 25% of the labor market.
