What's Ethical?

(March 03, 2006)  Here's the text of the press release we cited in yesterday's Bugler:

The Oracle Applications Users Group (OAUG), the world's largest user knowledgebase for the family of Oracle(R) Applications users, announced the development of its Skills Marketplace, a job board specializing in connecting applications users seeking positions with potential employers.

Skills Marketplace is free to all qualified job seekers, both OAUG members and non-members, and provides an array of features designed to make the job-search process more efficient and effective by highlighting specific skills and needs.

In addition to a resume, each candidate's online profile allows him or her to showcase special skills through the application's questionnaires. This enables job seekers to classify themselves by application type and rank their skills in any of the Oracle E-Business Suite, PeopleSoft, JD Edwards and Oracle Retail product areas. Candidates may also apply to jobs directly through Skills Marketplace, save job searches and track job applications.

For an annual fee, employers can use the job board to post job descriptions and search for candidates based on product area expertise and predetermined levels of experience. Currently, OAUG member companies can post their first three job descriptions free of charge.

"The OAUG Skills Marketplace is a robust and flexible application that allows companies to set up their own job descriptions or modify one of the hundreds of available templates to assist in targeting the exact candidate they need," said Patricia Dues, president OAUG. "The job board also offers individual applications users a practical, helpful tool for finding their next jobs."

We think it bears your close attention. OAUG is an Oracle subsidized non-profit whose primary goal is to improve the effectiveness of Oracle users. It's a  fan club with benefits that flow in two directions: to Oracle and to its users. The structure is one of those not-quite arm's length things.

By offering a job-board to members of the fan club, Oracle is quietly biting the hands that feed it. Helping users move between various Oracle customers makes Oracle a more solid offering while increasing attrition pressures on their paying clients. The distance between Oracle and OAUG softens the blow but does not diminish the ethical question.

This is the type of issue we'll all face as we move into permanent labor shortages (You could say that there's always been a shortage of Oracle talent.) Customers make great employees. Customers compete with each other for employees who know how to use your products. You have a relationship with those users. What's the right way to navigate this murky turf?

The boundaries between employers, employees and the marketplace have shifted and become transparent. There's no way that outdated ideas about loyalty and competitive differentiation will play to a market with multiple generations of layoff, downsizing and outsourcing experience.

This press release signals the beginning a new era of competition for the loyalty of potential employees.
