Download: Integrated Employment Branding Presentation Planning (January 6, 2006) -- Setting Goals and Planning is a universal behavior at the beginning of the year. Take a few minutes and create your plan to plan.
A professional Recruiter holds one of the most complex jobs in the entire organization. With
limited training, the Recruiter
With limited upward mobility (except in well tuned organizations like the Military), we wonder why Recruiters ever stay in their jobs longer than the bare minimum requirements. The few great players do it because they either love the level of human interaction or they love the hunt itself. In this high rush, low reward environment, it's difficult to find the time to plan. Most young Recruiting supervisors find themselves barely able to build reporting and status systems. The idea that the pace can be controlled through solid planning seems like an elusive bit of fantasy. That's exactly the kind of environment in which real planning can have the largest impact.
RECAP: 2005 In Review:
Underneath the noise is a separate story. While there were a few stellar blogs that actually engaged in recruiting, most recruiting blogs were about recruiting. The point is not as subtle as it seems. Gautam Ghosh was our top nominee for Best Recruiting Blog of 2005. His blog is entitled : "Gautam Ghosh on Management: Gautam's thoughts on Organizations, Work, People, Strategy, Learning, Knowledge, Innovation and High Performance. Focused on India, but spanning the globe." It's a stunning set of perspectives on Recruiting, HR and business realities. It's written by an HR manager who, like Jeff Hunter, is demonstrating a world view that adds real value at the corporate strategic table and in the industry as a whole. (More).
Two sides of the same coin, the sale of the Knight-Ridder (KRI) empire (number four) and this year's rise of Recruiting.com (number three) are a microcosm of the changing of the media guard. The old school, failing in its slow and gentle way, is suffering a serious shakeup. The new school, groping its way towards the new era is built on idealism and experimentation. (More).
On the other side of town, full of the ethics and values that launched the contemporary newspaper industry, Recruiting.com took a huge stretch in awakening this year. A firm place in the muddy sea of the Recruiting blogosphere, the operation is a labor of love. Jason Davis (who we've covered often) runs a recruting firm as his full time gig. The weblog operation is a passion that occupies an increasing share of his time.(More).
In the 1990s, interbiznet was the only firm in the world tracking the detailed statistics of online job board proliferation, job posting volume, ATS company sales and so on. It was hard work and lacked the automation or elegance of the systems in place today. The market was at the mercy of one supplier of (usually optimistic) statistics. It's hard to put a coherent business plan together with only one source for your data. We've long since gone out of that business for loftier pursuits. (More).
Next in the queue, at number 5, is the H3 patent for email based referrals networks. On November 22, 2005, the US Patent Office awarded patent number 6,968,313, "Method and apparatus for facilitating and tracking personal referrals". Here's the language: (More).
The job referral companies really changed the landscape this year. Jobster, H3, and to a lesser extent Job Thread and others, having been making a serious splash in both customer acquisition and general press attention. In the early spring, we predicted that Jobster would be this year's winner in the buzz category. We compared Jobster and H3 (the specs are OBE (overtaken by events). We offered the following table in our three part series on Referral tools (1, 2, 3): (More).
The internet is really all about local. This year's extraordinary preaching about the flat earth aside, local services have stolen much of the thunder from the larger internet plays. This is not to say that the big job boards are in imminent danger. It just means that the competition between the new entrants will be waged at a local level. Craigslist makes a powerful disclaimer on the top of each sale page: (More).
Somewhere, we read that CareerJournal, the Wall Street Journal's online career section, signed it's 100th content distribution agreement. Snagajob, a heavily trafficked job site for part time and hourly jobs, was lucky enough to be the recipient of deal 100: (More).
It was a heady year with investment returning to the marketplace and actual IPOs being launched. Honest new products and approaches arrived and took center stage. The realities of the age wave we've been discussing for a decade began to take actionable shape. 2005 was a pivotal year, an inflection point in a history that seems to be unlike anything we've expected. (More).
