BoB (Best of the Blogs)
(September 14, 2005) This week, the focus of the BoB list is bringing you up to speed on the technical and business issues effecting the Human Capital Industry. As we've been saying, things are changing. These blogs will help you
stay abreast.
- Go for The Moon When Hiring for a Startup by Tom Evslin from blog.tomevslin.com is a
response on the Always on Network to a blog piece from Bernanrd Moon. "The bottom line is that no matter how good your team appears to investors, what really counts is how your team works together in the trenches." You're not hiring to please potential VCs with a team that's great on paper; you need a
team that will succeed. Many of the "names" you can hire are burned out, tired, too-rich to be motivated, or experts at failing upward. It's hard enough to find the right people without worrying about how they're going to look to outsiders.
- Craigslist is just the beginning of newspapers' technological torment by john burke
on EditorsWeBlog "Rick Summers, technology analyst, warns newspapers that it is still "too early to say that Craigslist is the model to be emulated or that it's really the clear winner." However, in almost the same breath he says "When things are free,
it's hard to provide someone with an incentive to switch," thus Craig may have hit the bulls eye after all and newspapers, if they are to remain in the classified business, will have to follow suit."
- How Wikipedia's rising recognition may affect newspapers by john burke on
EditorsWeBlog "The popular Wikipedia, an online encyclopedia, easily holds the distinction of top reference site on the Web with double the traffic of
Dictionary.com. In fact, it is so popular that its growth rate, 154% last year according to Reuters,
means that it could soon surpass the New York Times and other news sites in terms of page hits. This statistic could have some interesting consequences for the future of newspapers."
- Rule #1: Do Not Hire Family. You've heard it said that family members who visit are like fish—after a few days they start to smell." from Who Not To Hire on
Management Issues
- Social Network Analysis: What to Map on How to Save the World by
Dave Pollard. "What better way to communicate how well each employee is doing at their job than by giving them a map that shows how well they are perceived to be supporting their networks? Suppose for example
you got this map, and it showed that your peers rated you extremely highly, but your boss rated you low. Imagine what eye-opening conversations could result: Does this mean your boss is an idiot, or does it mean you're doing all this work helping
others do their jobs
at the perceived cost of getting your own essential work done? And if management perceives it is the latter, are they right or are you just under-appreciated and suboptimally employed, and should you in fact
have your job description changed so that helping those people who rate your help so highly
becomes your job?"
- "The theory of the Long Tail is that our culture and economy is increasingly shifting away from a focus on a relatively small number of "hits" (mainstream products and markets) at the head of the demand curve and toward a huge number of niches in the tail. As the costs of
production and distribution fall, especially online, there is now less need to lump products and consumers into one-size-fits-all containers. In an era without the constraints of physical shelf space and other bottlenecks of distribution, narrowly-target goods and services can be as economically
attractive as mainstream fare." Long Tail 101 By Chris Anderson on The Long Tail also see

- "The ranks of middle management are populated by a disproportionate number of difficult, self-important middle-aged men who lack communication skills are not team players." Management
Issues
- Seth Godin has published a free ebook on blogging. As he describes it, "Who's There is not an ebook about how to
write better or how to follow the traditional conventions about formatting and building a blog. It's not designed to sell you one service instead of another, either. Instead, I divide the blog world into three groups and turn my attention to one. And in particular, I try to sell you hard on how building
a blog asset can have a spectacular impact on you, your career, your organization and your ideas." Awesome. Downloaded! From Steve Rubel
- "Through RSS, the Internet is moving slowly from a "push" environment (information is 'pushed' at me either through the web, email, instant messaging - whether I want it or not) to a "pull" environment (I can 'pull' all new information where and whenever I want, and only
the information I want)." from Finding a job with RSS by Joel Burslem
- Top 10 Things You Can Do To Get Blogged from TechCrunch "Bloggers want to tell a story. Help them. Pandora is different because they break down music technically – interesting! 60% of
FaceBook's users log in daily – wow! Writely is allowing people to visualize a world without thick clients – big story!"
- John Sumser
