China (September 09, 2005) If you take a look at the "You Should Know" section of today's Bugler (archived), you'll find a staggering array of articles from around the world. Many of them deal with the impact of labor shortages on local economies. In Japan, it's a core issue in the election as the population contracts. In Russia, the decline is nearly 2%/year. Scotland has political initiatives and Germany monitors the problem on an ongoing basis. It seems like America has its head further in the sand than the rest of the world. That's the luxury afforded to the largest and richest economy. As long as we continue to attract massive numbers of immigrants, our population will grow (at the expense of accelerating the shrinkage in others). It seems like an unlikely scenario. The US population grows from immigration while everyone else is shrinking? Certainly the home countries will start to compete to retain their workers and therefore reduce the rate of their contraction. America will be in the position of competing to attract immigrants if it wants to continue to expand the standard of living. Take a look at the following article from China Daily. It describes the Chinese government's massive attention to the size, sharpe, structure and skills of their huge workforce. They're worried about shortages.
