Strange Weather
(July 22, 2005) July is usually a quiet month followed only by August in terms of the lack of activity in our space. This year, something's up. Business seems to be closing on a lot of fronts and market momentum is high. Recruiters are getting trained and forecasts for coming employment seem very upbeat.

We're running smack into the talent shortage.

If you follow the Bugler (our sister publication), you'll see that deal-flow, alliance development and new product offerings are reaching some sort of fevered pitch. Meanwhile, around the world, the combination of skills imbalances, declining workforce populations and varying approaches to the management of immigration are causing the demand for talent to routinely exceed the available local supply. In places like New Zealand, there is a crisis already. Every country is forecasting a problem in some sector as early as next year.

Meanwhile, the explosion of industry commentary and available of information has really just begun. In order to compete effectively, more and more companies will launch more and more publications (blogs). The data overload, combined with an honestly changing environment makes it hard to keep things straight.

Recruiting strategies, an element of management relegated to nostalgia for the past couple of years, are back in style.

The more things change, the more they stay the same.

John Sumser
