Infrastructure (June 03, 2005) Yesterday, we started the conversation on Community, that is, the people and connections that make the online HR industry what it is. We're thinking that in the era of social software, you might expect experts in Human Capital and its management to be leading through demonstration. There is a rapidly growing universe of institutions and communications vehicles. Now, how do we weave them together? First of all, the players are different than you might expect. Some directly represent their employers (like the jobster blog). Some are close to that model (like Lefkow's great stuff). Many are international (like this new one in India or recruiting.com in Canada). Some, like hr.com are vendor neutral. Others are vendors (Veritude for example). Still others are complex shells for vendors (HCI comes to mind). That means that the 'community' arrives in place with differing business models and views of ethics. For some fascinating reason, there seems to be little in the way of overlap between the players, just discordant voices in need of some choir direction. Part of the philosophy of blogging in most other areas is that credit is passed freely among the players. A good idea in one venue gets recognized as such in the other. In this model, we all aspire to and point out excellence when we see it. Our neighborhood currently runs as if everyone was competing with everyone else all of the time. There's a level of shabbiness that comes from hoarding the market's attention. We've started to use the Bugler to showcase smarts throughout the industry wherever we can find it. Loads of people who currently see themselves as competitors are actually quite complementary. Traffic from one can and should help the development of the other. Traffic and links breed more traffic and links.
