Ziggy-vu (April 01, 2005) - The first website we ever evaluated was a service that collected profile data. In those days, a little arm waving went a long, long way. The service, whose name was more forgettable than "Ziggs", routinely calculated the remaining time it would take to fill their database. 500,000 profiles was a milestone worthy of expensive champagne. The "Ziggs Index" is a modest resume database with roughly 2.3 million profiles. At a price point of free, it's an interesting resource for sourcing activities. (Zoominfo, the artist formerly known as Eliyon is 10x the size but far more expensive.) Ziggs plans to finance its growth by selling profiles and search engine placement to individuals. We're certain that this has drawn a solid chuckle in Zoominfo's headquarters. There is a very interesting thing happening here. Subcomponents of last year's social networking software are breaking out into products. Jobster, notably, is using the relationship management component with great early success. These guys at Ziggs are segregating the profile part. Hmmm. What do you call an online profile that contains some personal and professional information and is searchable? A homepage, a web page, an online resume? It's like dejavu all over again. John
