Planning Time
(December 09, 2004) -- A professional
Recruiter holds one of the most complex jobs in the entire organization. With
limited training, the Recruiter
- Provides time critical resources to ongoing programs
- Represents the company in a variety of settings
- Reviews and evaluates candidates for suitability
- Works under relentless, reactive time pressures
- Is the make or break point for long-term company growth!
In order to accomplish these routine challengers, Recruiters must possess the following skills and attributes (among others):
- Negotiation (Win-Win)
- Research (Speed Reading with Comprehension)
- Organizational Political Acumen
- Leadership (Managing w/o Requisite Authority)
- Graciousness (with Candidates and Hiring Managers alike)
- Copywriting and Spin Development (For Ads and Persuasive Conversation)
- Technical Adroitness (Explaining Roles Outside of Personal Experience)
- Interviewing
- Workflow Coordination
- Expectation Management
More often than not, these skills are blended in a fast paced, high volume environment. We don't know many Recruiters who have the time to sit around
waiting for something to do. There's always a hot priority and a queue of hiring managers who believe that their urgent requirement demands immediate attention.
With limited upward mobility (except in well tuned organizations like the Military), we wonder why Recruiters ever stay in their jobs longer than the bare minimum requirements.
The few great players do it because they either love the level of human interaction or they love the hunt itself.
In this high rush, low reward environment, it's difficult to find the time to plan. Most young Recruiting supervisors find themselves barely able to
build reporting and status systems. The idea that the pace can be controlled through solid planning seems like an elusive bit of fantasy.
That's exactly the kind of environment in which real planning can have the largest impact. Over the next couple of days, we'll look at some of the things that cam be planned and managed in order to reduce the intensity of the daily Recruiting environment.
