Credentialed Recruiters (July 06, 2004) -- Although two thirds of every dollar spent on human capital is devoted to acquisition, there is no career path for a recruiter. A really great recruiter is rewarded by more years as a recruiter. This is the single reason for the enormous turnover each year from corporate recruiters to the staffing industry. The only way to advance at all is by moving into professional recruiting. Otherwise, it's a dead end occupation. The process of professionalizing a dead end occupation like this involves the establishment of key competencies, curriculum development and certification programs. There are some interesting initial moves in the Society of Human Resource Management, but they, like most in the industry are unclear about the incentives. As the recruiter's responsibility for maintaining the supply of labor expands into real accountability, a whole series of new skills for online community facilitation to marketing to the use of a broad range of assessment tools will be required. As the labor shortage expands, so will the variation in jobs within recruiting and thus, the profession. Key to the evolution will be the emergence of industry wide quality standards as have been generated in most other service industries and occupations.
