Job Board Definitions VII
(May 06, 2004) - The other raw function performed by job boards (and almost any platform ATS you can think of) is the refining of candidates. From millions of data points come short lists of possibilities. Sadly, the industry is dependent on search technology that is
developed for other purposes. As a result, most of the refining boils down to keyword searches of databases resulting in an overflow of data.
Search engines produce long lists. The user is left in the head scratching position of having to assume that the presented order
is relevant to the task of finding the right employee. Whether or not the user is on the receiving end of a mail flow of data, the output of a job board is always driven by a search engine.
Recently, we've been examining a tool called
Grokker. Taking results from six or seven search engines, it organizes and presents the output in a graphic form...far easier to navigate than a list of a thousand answers. The software itself performs an analysis on the results and then lumps them into a
number of different sorts. The same answer can appear in a number of categories. The user gets a visual picture of the results.
It's certainly not the first attempt to deliver visual results from search processes. NorthernLight used to do this in the online market as a
art of its output though the categorization was simplistic. Both Unicru and Resumix use forms of categorization in their core search processes. The difference is that Grokker goes further with the automatic categorization than anything we've seen to date. It's not specific to our industry but it certainly
could be.
Download a copy and fiddle with the output. You can be reasonably sure that AIRS like operations (resume mining services) will start to demonstrate visual interfaces as a way of mining the data n their databases. It would be great if the job boards began to
differentiate themselves in this way.John
