(April 02, 2004) - Congratulations are in order for Recruitsoft. Having changed their name to "Taleo", the company has filed the preliminary IPO paperwork. Anticipating a valuation of $115 Million, the offering will be underwritten by Citigroup, Lehman Brothers, Merrill Lynch, CIBC World Markets, Harris Nesbitt Gerard and ThinkEquity Partners.

Naming a company is always a tricky business. We're not exactly certain that Recruitsoft got this one right. While we think the idea was to sound vaguely technical and talent oriented, perhaps you'd say "Tale-Oh" Our pronunciation (Tally-o) is more horse racy. We guess you might say "Tal EO" which would blend the idea of talent and the scream of Howard Dean.

Generally, the high-dollar naming firms find a sound that has no observable definition. That way, the brand can fill the "space". In the case of Taleo, there are a variety of definitions in a variety of languages. Most of the meanings seem to have relatively negative connotations for a business.

Some definitions of Taleo:

Taleo: Waist

Taleo: about one half a centavo or one fourth of a picayune

Taleo: Horsecart

Taleo: Surface

Taleo: A song by Santana in French, of course. "I'll just sing Stoned again."

Taleo: the Northwest Monsoon

Taleo v. Taleo: a court case establishing the right to use a restraining order in a marital situation

Taleo: Made from plaited strips of bamboo to form five or seven points, they serve as a charm against evil spirits. They are placed near entrances to houses where people died recently to prevent entry by the spirit of the dead.

Monte Taleo: Where Saint Benedict lived for three years as a hermit

Taleo: Talisman to ward off evil spirits

Taleo: A Village on the Nam Theun River in Laos

Taleo: Sleek modern bed design

Marketing challenges aside, we really wish the folks at Taleo the very best. An IPO in our space is good news for everyone.
