(December 03, 2003) - Although Craigslist will occasionally offer an EBay related job, no one has yet harnessed the premier auction site as a job fulfillment vehicle. The opportunity is hardly small. In a related move, Accenture has developed an interesting business. They are acting as the liquidators of excess inventory for large companies using Ebay. With 60 customers (including Sony, Fujitsu, Sharp and TI), Accenture has deployed a 90 member team to handle the ins and outs of moving large quantities of material through the EBay channel. By using eBay directly manufacturers can cut one more cost layer out of the equation. Accenture gets paid a percentage of every transaction--averaging about 10%--from the manufacturers. SAP has announced a similar set of services built into their software. The advantage offered by Accenture is simple...the range and complexity of EBay's markets requires an ongoing set of human interventions. But, SAP's moves make clear the potential of the EBay market. From a staffing perspective, EBay is a logical ground for launching the sorts of contract service based offerings tried (and closed down) during the late 90's. Accenture was able to make their move by transplanting excess high quality employees into a new arena. You'd have to guess that KForce, Adecco or Manpower is capable of the same sort of deployment.
