Email Is Dead II (September 03, 2003) - The Sobig.F virus is putting the nail in the email coffin. While we've been worrying out the question for a while now, the past month's spam explosion has actually changed behaviors. We know of instances in which people have received 35,000 virus generated emails in a day. We're hardly alone with our measly 1,800 average spams. We sadly recall when a flood of 400 or 500 spams a day caused us to change email addresses. Now, that's a relatively common experience. This time is different. Lots of people have experienced high-volume spam for the first time. We no longer know anyone who will open an attachment from other than a very trusted source. Unsolicited email exploited the goodwill of new Internet users. Always worried that some important email might be missed, people used to scan the incoming crap for signs of intelligence. At 35,000 pieces per day, it's a fight for survival. The question changes from making sure to get all of the important stuff to getting rid of most of the crap. Recruiters and Job Hunters alike are wrestling with the problems of time wasted by huge volumes of email. No savvy recruiter is likely to open an attached email resume. Systems that are totally dependent on email services are shuddering under the pressure of the unanticipated volumes of mail crossing their servers. The very same techniques that made resume-mining services so powerful are the foundation of the surge of crap mail. Operations that built their brands based on email service are noticing severe declines in readership. It's going to get far worse before it gets better. John Sumser
