What's Happening?

(April 30, 2003) -- While the economy continues to sputter, some interesting things are taking shape. You can tell the real entrepreneurs because they continue to innovate when times are tough.
  • Yahoo has made HotJobs a full module in the My Yahoo system. Although this may seem like falling off a log to some, the technical integration must have been tough. The simple move creates something that we haven't seen before. Now, My Yahoo is a comprehensive recruiting environment with calendaring, photos, voicemail, travel arrangements, relocation data, conferencing and all integrated with the nearly ubiquitous instant messaging system. This has the potential to be an industry changing phenom.
  • We've been looking at HireGate. The system inches video interviewing a step or two closer to mainstream. Our local BestBuy is showcasing the new Panasonic Internet Refrigerator that includes web access and the hub of a home network. It won't be long until you can grab a midnight snack and interview for the new job at the same time.
  • You can sense that the winds are about to shift again. We've seen two business plans for resume management and matching systems based on structured lexicons a (a la the old Resumix) and deep profiling. It's 1994 all over again.
  • RON, the sometimes visible sometimes hidden home for small independent recruiters is forsaking its roots to chase the Job Ad Distribution market with HR.net.
  • Meanwhile, Bill Vick, the originator of RON, has emerged with a new offering: SeniorSuccess.net. Lo and behold, it's a blog-based publication. Somehow, it's tucked into Bill's current plan for world domination: XtremeRecruiting, whose mission is to turn good recruiters into great ones. Give Bill a little time and he'll change the world again.
  • Fairly recently, TopJobsUsa (and the NicheBoards community in general), posted their 1,000,000th job. The collective of small entrepreneurs is a long way from being the largest but continues to make solid strides. We look for their success to begin to spawn real competition.
