Niche Specialization
(
November 8, 2002) - Niche Specialization There are a number of "plum" niches: Financial Professionals in New York or San Francisco, Engineers in DC, Boston, Seattle or Atlanta, IT Professionals in Silicon Valley, DC or Boston, Government retirees in DC, Entertainment workers in LA, Energy workers in Texas, Nurses almost anywhere and so on. In each case, the region has an industrial base that holds specific skills in high regard.

The Media Bistro / Craigslist Model, which includes events, gossip, career advice, advancement opportunities, and an ongoing social network is repeatable in each of these settings. The business model does not require deep penetration into the segment. Rather, it requires the identification of the social leadership and the expansion of their strength.

A company that serves this particular market makes a deep commitment to invest in social capital by delivering free, relevant events to a subset. Word of mouth and the inevitable desire to witness or participate drives traffic to both the website and the events creating a sustainable supply of actively engaged candidates.

Excerpt from 2002 Electronic Recruiting Index.
