Big?

(October 28, 2002) -  At the end of this article, you'll find our list of the top 26 job boards in the world. Why 26? We wanted to show that, while most staffing firms have completely failed to develop their own Job Board, MRI's Brilliant People is hanging right off the edge of the top 25 Global Job Boards.

The chart is based on data available on 10-12-02 from Alexa. When you look at the chart, you'll notice a number of things:

  • The rank is based on the universe of job boards contained in the list.

  • You won't recognize all of them, so the link is click-able.

  • The Alexa rank refers to the rank (out of all the websites in the world) given by Alexa.

  • Clicking on the Alexa Ranking for a particular site will take you to the Alexa chart for a year's performance (a good way to tell who is a flash-in-the-pan.

  • There are some entries in red, preceded by a red > , these are typically seen as Applicant Tracking or Recruiting Software providers. More about these follows.

  • Links refers to the number of links that point to the website. In general, it correlates with traffic.

  • As usual, we don't claim omnipotence, if a service belongs on this list, send us a note.

Let's start with something fairly obvious (and we've mentioned it before). If this was just a domestic ranking, Peopleclick would be in the Top 10. Now, everyone knows that Peopleclick is not a job board. There is even a fair amount of speculation about its stability as an ATS provider. So, what does it mean that Peopleclick has more traffic than most (remember, there are thousands) job boards?

Peopleclick, like the other listings in red, is an Application Service provider or ASP. That means that they host their solution rather than installing a licensed application on a customer's site (a generalization, but mostly true). One of the things they provide is employment website hosting and design. In other words, if you go to one of their customer's employment websites, you may well be using services that are actually on the Peopleclick servers. The same and more is true of BrassRing, Hire.com, Recruitsoft, Recruitmax and WebHire. Pure Carbon's JobPlanet is rapidly heading towards this group!

As these companies grow their customer bases (and, surely you know that we don't see all of them succeeding), an interesting thing is going to happen.

It is already arguable that the combination of the ASP companies are equal in size to FlipDog, Dice, or Net-Temps. By this time next year, we can easily imagine the companies sharing traffic that is equal to or greater than the combined volume of CareerBuilder and HotJobs. That means that we are on the verge of a time when traffic to company websites exceeds traffic to job boards. Now that's disintermediation.

The implications of this listing should have a very powerful impact in the board rooms of each and every one of the more traditional job boards. We'd love to hear your thoughts on the subject.
