(September 18, 2002) - A recent Washington
Post Story detailed some of the changes in campus enrollments in IT majors.
The story (which included this chart) ascribed a range of factors to the decline in the
number of IT students including "it isn't hip" and "you can't
get the chicks with that anymore."
Rooted in data from the Computing Research Association (CRA), the
article takes a relatively unsophisticated view of the trends in the pipeline
for IT workers. (If you want to take the time to make up your own mind, CRA
provides a wealth of market
data and industry specific salary surveys.) CRA also produces the "Forsythe List". Though
it is not supposed to be used for recruiting purposes, it is a tremendous asset
in understanding the dynamics of the local supply of degreed IT professionals.
IT enrollments are going to
continue to decline.
The question for companies
is simple: how do you guarantee that your requirements for IT workers will
continue to be met?
