Rankings
(September 10, 2002) - We've always recommended Alexa as an intelligence gathering tool for any professional user of the web. The service, now owned by Amazon, tracks user behavior (you get great information in exchange for their ability to monitor your web behavior). In addition to describing the other sites that users of your property visit, it provides reviews (not always positive) and a traffic ranking. They even offer a listing of the top 500 Websites (many of them appear to be Asian).
Now, we're fans of traffic rankings in general. We're also acutely aware of the fact that a single vision of traffic rarely captures all cases. Alexa is simply one measure and needs to be considered in the context of other measurements. Alexa, however, has the decent advantage of being free. The fact that they can only measure the traffic of people who actually use the Alexa Software is no more suspect than the tactics used by other measurement companies.
Brian Kreuger, CEO of CollegeGrad.com has taken the time to prepare a routine compilation of the rankings. It provides an interesting picture of the Job Board Industry. This table summarizes the rankings as of September 4th, 2002. We'll post them periodically as Brian sends them.
