(September 06,
2002) - We watched in surprise as Andy McKelvey joined
Bill Clinton and Bob Dole on the Larry King show Tuesday night. Announcing the
completion of the $100 Million fundraising for the Families of Freedom
Scholarship Fund, the threesome flattered each other. The two former political
opponents credited McKelvey with bringing them together to work on the project.
The Fund provides for education assistance for postsecondary study to
financially needy dependents, including children and spouses of those killed or
permanently disabled as a result of the terrorist attacks on September 11,
2001. It was Clinton's first media appearance since he left office
McKelvey,
as you may know, is the CEO of TMP, the parent of Monster.com. He's
the entrepreneur who had the sense, timing and leadership to purchase Monster
and grow it into the dominating force that it is today. An entrepreneur by
birth, McKelvey is a shrewd investor and a logical candidate for "father
of the industry". It was a little more than interesting to see him aligned
with two other great figures from the 90s.
We've quietly been chiding
Monster executives about the need for the company to assume the leadership
responsibilities associated with market dominance. The sort of charitable
giving and leadership provided by McKelvey is an extraordinary start. We
certainly don't see other industry leaders working to align the industry with
broader social issues. By focusing on college and scholarships, McKelvey
demonstrates the sort of concern for Human Capital that we all need to be
associated with.
Hearing Bill Clinton
mention Monster.com several times during the short interview was worth more to
the industry than it was to McKelvey and his firm. You can sense this when you
consider that the powerful TMP media machine didn't even put out a press
release about this remarkable moment.
It's worth noting that
McKelvey put a fair amount of his fortune at risk to deliver the financial
reports to Wall Street in August. We saw that conference as yet another
indicator of the sort of entrepreneurial leadership we should be expecting from
the TMP team.
Nice going.
