The Consumer Price Index for All Urban Consumers (CPI-U) increased 0.1 percent in July, before seasonal adjustment. The July level of 180.1 was 1.5 percent higher than its level in July 2001.

The Consumer Price Index for Urban Wage Earners and Clerical Workers (CPI-W) also rose 0.1 percent in July, prior to seasonal adjustment. The July level of 176.1 was 1.3 percent higher than the index in July 2001.

Real average weekly earnings declined by 0.8 percent from June to July after seasonal adjustment, according to preliminary data. A 0.9-percent decline in average weekly hours and a 0.2-percent increase in CPI-W were partly offset by a 0.3-percent rise in average hourly earnings.

Unemployment Insurance Weekly Claims Report
In the week ending August 10, the advance figure for seasonally adjusted initial claims was 388,000. The 4-week moving average was 381,750. The advance seasonally adjusted insured unemployment rate was 2.8 percent for the week ending August 3, an increase of 0.1 percentage point from the prior week's revised rate of 2.7 percent.
