    Unicru

(March 27, 2002) - Beaverton, Oregon is home to one of the more interesting privately held companies in our space: Unicru. Among its many products, the company delivers a personality test that sorts hourly employees. Because their core focus is on the optimization of hourly employee recruitment, retention and productivity, they have a series of interesting initiatives associated with Welfare to Work. Championed by an interesting range of backers and investors, the company is likely to be a near term success story.

Although their sales pitch includes the remarkably bogus notion that a job board no one has ever heard of is going to attract hourly workers to the internet (the site is ranked 295,718 by Alexa), we'll guess that most of their customers don't see the problem. After all, the focus at Unicru is really about sorting applicants and standardizing the application process.

It's a neat concept. Kiosk application centers in stores ensure that applications are completed, tests taken and so on. The system interfaces directly with payroll and outputs tax credit information for the Welfare to work stuff. The model works and is in place.

We think that their core value proposition (from their website) bears serious consideration. They claim to be able to use the hiring system to predict employment problems. The fancy ATS providers could learn a great deal from the promise alone.

The Unicru System is a comprehensive set of employee management tools. Integral to this System is its ability to aid you in your decision-making process.

First, Unicru automates all of the most time-consuming tasks your hiring managers must face. Then our System allows you to measure their results, identify hiring issues and improve the process with each and every hire.

Using data-mining techniques, and applied Artificial Intelligence, the Unicru System lets you greatly reduce problems, by predicting them before they happen. And it helps you learn from them when they do happen.

Under 30% of the workforce is salaried and college degreed. The other 70% of the market is being eyed by a huge range of players. It's really the newspapers' last stand. Unicru is one of the few operations we have seen with demonstrated competence in the space.
