    Gap Analysis

(March 22, 2002) - In last week's article on the consequences of the realities of unemployment and the labor supply (Who's Unemployed), we mentioned the shortage of tools that define the difference between a candidate's abilities, skills and experience and the requirements of a particular job. Increasingly, employers will be required to repair the deficit in order to meet their staffing requirements. In response, we received the following note from Mike Rosenbaum at Catalyst Solutions:

We were started in 1998 with the help from some money from Harvard
University to develop a software and a process for identifying
non-college educated individuals who would, with the correct training
and development, be good fits for professional jobs. We then hire folks
while they develop the skills they need to fill jobs like software
developer, database developer, technical analyst, quality assurance
engineer, and other technical and health care related jobs. Ultimately,
they work for our clients, who are health care providers, health care
technology companies, and small and large businesses, at substantially
discounted rates--because folks do not have a typical educational
    pedigree.

Admittedly, we accept only 3% of our applicants. But our software and
process, which measures reactions to stress, problem solving ability,
and a range of other qualities, allows us to find the folks with less
education but more ability--and then to train them in the skills they
need. And our clients get mid-level developers and other professionals
at $20 per hour. Many of our professionals are promoted within 2-4
months, and a number have been promoted into managerial positions where
they have personally been in a position to hire from us.

We spent 2 years and many a penny on R&D before we started, but we have
now been operational for a little over a year and are enjoying some
small-scale success. But to be honest, we generally find interest only
when we speak directly with a technology manager, and operations
manager, or other senior executive. Human resources professionals
generally are not interested in talking with us, because our profile of
person looks a little different than their typical candidate. So your
words were wonderful to hear, and I hope that people take them to heart!

Catalyst Solutions is focused on providing software developers who are nearly as affordable as off-shore solutions. They do this by applying a rigorous screening process that is set to identify key success traits. Their promises (from the website) are very interesting:

    The Bottom Line

    $18-25 per hour.

That's right, for talented, experienced mid-level and junior developers. Competitive with off-shore development, but located right on your offices. Whether you need a Visual Basic developer, or someone with experience in ASP, ColdFusion, SQL, JavaScript, or other web application development tools, or someone who can support your proprietary software, we provide the best. You can also hire them as your full-time employees, and the combined fee and salary are even less.

We could talk about it forever. As you might imagine, many of our clients have considered using off-shore development resources. But most of our professionals are U.S. citizens--those that are not are foreign nationals who have been living in the U.S. and are eligible to work here--and they will work in your office. Feel free to contact us for information and references from our current clients. Issues of time difference, remote development, and other challenges are not there. Just cost-effective, talented development and support resources.

They are worth a closer look for companies who provide or use developers.
