    (March 19, 2002) - While we were in New York, we were blessed with the opportunity to attend Baird's HCM/Business Services conference. If you don't know, Baird produces a monthly map of the Human Capital Sector. What we didn't know was that the team behind the report is a group of brilliant and passionate analysts who really get the space. 

    The conference was a gathering of institutional investors who viewed a series of about fifty company presentations. Since the audience was market oriented, the usual falderall, smoke and mirrors that you'd expect at a trade show was missing. Instead, the presenters focused on the business issues they tackle each day, current performance and plan for the future.

    Baird has, quite cleverly, integrated business services (there was a company that distributed maintenance parts) and the usual suspect in HCM. Staffing firms, temporary companies, outsourcing players, testing centralizers, paycheck administrators, and executive search firms all took their moment in the limelight.

    The comparison between the two camps was inevitable. All of the business services companies have made their money on supply optimization. None of the HR companies seemed to have considered the question. These were almost all publicly traded firms. The recession had each and every one of them focused on thrift and incremental improvements.

    There were some stunning surprises. Behemoth Manpower is led by an extremely articulate visionary who is profoundly passionate about his business. TMP is led by a brilliant fireball. Outsourcing the entire HR process is happening faster than you'd believe.
