Recruiting College
(February 21, 2002) -
As the industry matures and the looming demographic problems inch their way
inevitably towards our universe, we think it's time for the palyers to start to
take a larger view. There is no question that recruiting and related Human
Capital Acquisition-Management firms are essentially void of underlying theory
and scholarship. That there is no meaningful way to articulate the value of a
company's human or social capital is just the tip of the iceberg.
No, we're not suggesting that the industry needs
another committee. although they are great places to exchange business cards,
polish resumes and interview your next boss in your next company, committees
usually waste everyone's time without ever solviong the fundamental problem. A
close look at the HRXML consortium and its near perfect miss of the implications
of XML ought to prove the point. There is real work and scholarship involved and
little need for brokered solutions.
The industry needs real research and a core
curriculum.
The reason that there is nothing in the way of a
career path for a great recruiter boils down to a failure of the existing
"professional" organizations to provide a structured review of the
industry's practices. Even small professional groups take this chore on as a
part of their charter. The potential for real value optimization within the
disciplines of Human Capital Management exists today. We need it now.
