Somehow, Bernie perfected the trick of attracting bright, articulate, creative players to a backwater on Madison Avenue. Traditionally, the best and brightest go to the big non-Recruiting houses. In spite of the status question, Bernie managed to build a national enterprise that made its money handling the needs of customers the newspapers didn't really want. With volume and control of the float, The Hodes Agency became the largest and most innovative player in the game.

In the early days of interbiznet, Mr. Hodes was often our sponsor, turning up with a needed order just as we thought we'd seen the end of the business. Over the years, the company bought our annual reports, sponsored our various seminar series and advertised. It was a gentle act of encouragement and an occasional act of outright unmerited kindness.
