Auto Interview
(October 24, 2001) Here's a new twist. CareerWeb, long the strongest of the second tier players in the national game, has introduced an interview interface for their jobs database. The idea is so simple that it has probably never occurred to many in the industry. By creating a simple to use, industry and profession specific set of evaluation questions, CareerWeb is able to position themselves as a real value added service for both job hunters and employers.
We tried several paths through the interview process and found it remarkably well though out and unobtrusive. In five or six minutes, we'd answered the questions and shipped off our answers. Were there an industry interface usability award, this little gem would be a contender for the "innovation that made a difference" award this year.
The tool is used as a part of a "We're not a job board." positioning that the CareerWeb team is trying out. There are no jobs in the underlying database, just a flow of standardized data to employers who purchase the service. While we think the approach is weaker than a firm matchup to a database, and subject to the same sorts of criticisms as have plagued Korn-Ferry's FutureStep (candidate investment required, feedback not guaranteed)
According to Richard Grimes, the product development manager at CareerWeb, the new tool is radically increasing response rates and has already been used by 50,000 registered members in the first month after release. Our guess is that the interface reaches out to a slightly different segment of the market than standard resume creation or submittal forms. Although we can't confirm it, we're betting that response rates are showing a significant improvement.
Frankly, we think the approach is licensable and would be a great alternative as the front end on corporate employment websites. We also bet that it gets copied quickly.
