(September 06, 2001) If you listen to the old school, groaning under the weight of VC driven staffing and completely out of touch with customers, we are entering a consolidation phase that will reduce the industry to one or two national job boards. What rubbish. At the national level, we recognize about 50 well known brand names. While relative position within the top 25 changes over time, these companies have managed to deliver an enduring presence. Four of them are slated to merge. The most interesting thing about the Top 25 is that Salary.com has moved easily into the number three position (based on the number of job queries per month) after only recently entering the field. Many of its direct competitors don't even recognize it as a competitor yet. As the game evolves, we anticipate greater changes within the Top tier national organizations. Here are the top 25 in no particular order.
Executed simply, a job board may be run by a staff which is predictably sized between five and ten personnel. They may be run very cost consciously with staff of less than one full time person. We imagine the optimal configuration to be : - A CEO who makes sales calls among local executives- A Marketing manager who also handles some large account sales - A technical person who also answers the phone - Two full time sales people who operate on commission. Tomorrow: Surprises in the regional job board industry. - John Sumser © TwoColorHat. All Rights Reserved. Pinpoint Finance & Accounting Professionals at jobsinthemoney.
