Yahoo Classifieds

Yahoo represents a major shift (or at least a potential shift) in thinking about job-listings. Hundreds of companies took advantage of their "free" listings in the first two months of operation. As a job hunter's resource, Yahoo is unparalleled as a source of information. It suffers from the "Problem of Bigness". The consequences of their pricing strategy (which treats job listings as free content) will reverberate throughout the industry in 1997. Yahoo grapples with a huge information design problem. Any, even minor, changes have very expensive rippling effects throughout their site. On one valid level, Yahoo is easily the largest career information provider on the net. It represents such a minor component of their overall strategy that we wonder if they'll have the focus required to capitalize on it. Meanwhile, any plan to start an internet recruiting effort should include a solid swing at harnessing Yahoo's free listings.
