There are a couple of broad guiding principles in website design and architecture which will inform the final shape and size of the site.
"A successful website gets you off the web quickly". In other words, a good website will inspire a call to action, action which involves the prompting of consumer choice in a specific direction.
"Your website should seek to develop a relationship with its audience, such that it inspires repeat visits." A website is like a shop window. It needs constant refreshment to encourage return visits. Changes should seek to provide something new for the audience - information about industry developments, or simple "fun stuff". The audience should be encouraged to anticipate a return because they will find something of value, interest or entertainment. The spin-off of creating a sense of anticipation is an increase in "word-of-mouth" promotion. As we know, this type of promotion is the cheapest and most effective method of marketing - and, ultimately, selling.
In other words, your website needs to be dynamic and interactive.
