A Dozen Trends
Continuing his overview of the Recruiting Industry in 1999, John Sumser considers 12 Trends that affected the industry during the last year.

Bonuses Offered to Broader Range of Professionals
While the bulk of cash incentives still go to senior executives, a recent survey of chief information officers shows that a growing number of firms are offering bonuses at staff and management levels to recruit top IT candidates.

Check Out the Competition
VarsityBooks.com will provide Sallie Mae's customers with discounts and savings on textbooks and general interest books, extending VarsityBooks.com's reach to millions of potential customers. One considers this a partnership with interesting possibilities, given VarsityBook's new partnerships with JobDirect.com, Wetfeet.com, Studyabroad.com, and Homefair.com.

JobNetwork.com will power the search engine for the Metro Atlanta Chamber of Commerce AtlantaSmartCity.com job site.

NIIT, an IT education, consulting and development company providing full-service software and training solutions firm.

BTM Market Report
Market conditions continue to be thin and choppy, with nominal ranges being traded. USD/JPY and EURO/JPY continue to lose their intervention gains from Friday. USD/JPY fell to the 102.05 levels and EUR/JPY fell to 103.25 before rebounding. There are signs of strength in the Japanese economy, despite Japanese officials' continued warnings against excessive yen moves. EURO/USD traded in a narrow range, although supported by another rally in German stocks. USD/CAD continued its slide, triggering stops under 1.4650 and 1.4630, due to a combination of option-related selling and thin conditions.

Gearing Up
Opus360 Corp., which links companies with independent professionals, filed to raise $65 million in an initial public offering. The company's prospectus stated it had received word from counsel at the San Jose Mercury News claiming Opus' use of the service mark Free Agent and domain name violated the newspaper's ownership of those terms, and counsel asked Opus to stop using such.

Hiring Forecasts
Computerworld's Annual Hiring Forecast predicts the top 10 regions, jobs, and industries for the New Year. Its top picks are, respectively, the South Central United States, application development, and Federal Government/Military.

Department of Labor Reports
New reports outlining the steps to increase employment of adults with disabilities are now available from the U.S. Department of Labor.

Fewer Workers Expect To Be Laid Off
Despite nearly 700,000 corporate layoffs in 1999, only 1 percent of employed Americans expect to be downsized or dismissed during the next 12 months, according to a national telephone survey. The survey also found that 15 percent of the respondents expect to leave voluntarily for a new position and 7 percent hope to retire.

SIX WAYS NOT TO BUILD YOUR CAREER SITE

If a talented candidate dropped by your office, would you make her wait forever in the lobby, staring aimlessly at your company logo?

Would you demand her name, e-mail address, date of birth, current job and zip code before offering even the most basic information about your company? Would you force her to fill out complex applications just to find out if you're even hiring?

Of course not. You'd never do these things. No HR pro would--in real life.

But online, where nearly all potential hires begin their experience with your firm, many of us do all this and more. Maybe that's why 50 percent of all online job seekers describe the experience as unpleasant or frustrating.
