Top 15 Recruiting Stories of 1999
John Sumser reviews the most significant events and players in the field of Online Recruiting during the past year.

We're Ready, But Just In Case
Amtrak passenger service and major freight railroads will temporarily halt operations just before midnight this New Year's Eve as a precaution against Year 2000 computer problems.

i-Hoax
A number of people received an e-mail for job interviews at HotJobs and CBS only to discover they had been had. As both sites require memberships and passwords, it was likely an in-house prankster. One wonders who was trying to embarrass whom. This raises the concern of fake appointments with less than honorable intentions, especially for women. Perhaps a confirmation call would have settled that issue.

Check Out The Competition
JobAdvantage.com, an online recruiting community matching college students with employers, founded by College Pro Painter.

Published online, MIEO profiles job openings in all areas of the medical manufacturing industry.

Congruent International expands with a new enterprise that outsources international resources to technology companies.

eWork Exchange offers match results based on project requirements, virtual office tools to manage project work online, and benefit and back office services.

Advantage Hiring, Inc. provides employment selection tools information and applications.

Contingent And Alternative Employment Arrangements
The Bureau of Labor Statistics reports that these arrangements shows this pool of workers continues to be a small (between 1.9 - 4.3 percent) but stable proportion of the workforce. Independent contractors and contract company workers' wages increased by about 22 percent. While these workers have experienced high-wage growth, some workers with alternative work arrangements are being left behind. Full-time earnings for on-call and temporary workers are 87 percent and 63 percent respectively of traditional workers' wages.

Applause
Consultis, an information technology staffing and consulting services firm, pledges $50,000 to The Open Door Foundation, sponsored by the National Association of Computer Consultant Businesses and dedicated to helping talented young Americans with limited financial resources get the training and the skills necessary to keep America in the technological lead.

Aetna US Health Care donates six state-of-the-art computers to the Healing Place, a substance abuse treatment center, where people can learn basic computer skills that could help them re-enter the workforce. The company also donated $1,500 for staffing the computer center.

e Millennium Special Edition
Northern Light's collection of New Year's-themed Web sites.

SIX WAYS NOT TO BUILD YOUR CAREER SITE

If a talented candidate dropped by your office, would you make her wait forever in the lobby, staring aimlessly at your company logo?

Would you demand her name, e-mail address, date of birth, current job and zip code before offering even the most basic information about your company? Would you force her to fill out complex applications just to find out if you're even hiring?

Of course not. You'd never do these things. No HR pro would--in real life.

But online, where nearly all potential hires begin their experience with your firm, many of us do all this and more. Maybe that's why 50 percent of all online job seekers describe the experience as unpleasant or frustrating.
