Department of Labor November Statistics
Payroll employment rose, and the unemployment rate remains unchanged at 4.1 percent. The number of unemployed, 5.7 million, was essentially unchanged. Unemployment rates for the major demographic groups showed little or no change over the month. The labor force participation rate remained at 67.0 percent. Total employment was essentially unchanged at 134.1 million. The number of discouraged workers was 272,000.

The publisher of a magazine for the disabled unveiled a new Web site and tools to make the Internet more accessible to the blind and other disabled users. This comes on the heels of the National Federation of the Blind filing suit against America Online last month, alleging that AOL software discriminates against the disabled.

Demand Is Strong for College Grads
College graduates with a high level of computer proficiency and public speaking skills are among the most desirable job candidates, according to the Recruiting Trends survey from the Collegiate Employment Institute at Michigan State University. Graduates also will find the labor market expanding 10 to 15 percent during this academic year.

Couples Scale Back Work to Care for Families
Nearly three-fourths of middle-income working couples are scaling back work commitments for the sake of their families. Because most of these families do not see this as a public issue and are not working to change the way workplace hours are structured, it places the costs of adapting to social change on families instead of employers. The research was published in the November issue of the Journal of Marriage and the Family.
