Troubled Canadian networking gear firm Newbridge Networks Corp laid off 300 staff at its Ottawa-area headquarters, and announced 400 additional layoffs in its other operations … Olsten Corp's Robert Fusco will step down as president of home health care unit by the year's end.

High-Tech Legislation
Congress tackled a number of high tech bills this year, making life easier for big business while setting aside many consumer and civil rights concerns.

Online Recruitment Market Heats Up Down Under
Australia's News Interactive, the online division of News Ltd, claims it has signed up more than 60 employers for its online recruitment service due to go live on December 1. CareerOne will launch with over 10,000 new online positions and more than 13,000 jobs uploaded from its newspaper stable. The site will contain "silos" to categorize jobs - initial target groups include IT, administration, government and media. The News service will compete with Fairfax's MyCareer.com. And a third operator, US-based HotJobs.com, which entered the Australian market a month ago, says it has signed up 31 employers.

Super Bowl Attracts New Competitors
Internet companies hoping to increase recognition of their brand names are paying record prices. Each 30-second spot during the Super Bowl costs an average of $2 million plus, a 25-percent increase from the 1999 rate.
