In The News Elance.com, a website that connects companies with independent contractors, added 142,723 jobs in the second quarter, while online contractors working on jobs posted on its site earned $34.3 million in that time, up 12 percent from the previous quarter. (read more) Express Employment Professionals, a privately held staffing firm based in Oklahoma City, reports revenue is up 31.9 percent in the first half of 2011. AMN Healthcare Services Inc., a San Diego-based healthcare staffing company, reported second-quarter revenue rose 57.1 percent on a year-over-year basis to $234.5 million. On a sequential basis, from the first quarter of 2011, revenue rose 2.2 percent. AMN acquired Nursefinders Inc., the parent company of Medfinders, in September 2010. Monster's U.S. employment index dipped two points in July to 144, a reading that is in line with seasonal expectations, Monster Worldwide Inc. On an annual basis, the index rose 4 percent, or six points, the 18th consecutive month of growth. Analysts International Corp., an information technology staffing firm, reported second-quarter revenue was essentially flat on a year-over-year basis, while it turned a profit for the fourth consecutive quarter. Revenue in the quarter ended July 2 was $26.8 million, about the same as last year. The Economic Cycle Research Institute's weekly leading index of the U.S. economy rose to reading of 128.3 in the week ended July 29 from 127.6 in the previous week. The index's growth rate was 2.1 percent in the week ended July 29, compared with a growth rate of 2.0 percent in the previous week. From the BLS US Temporary Employment Flat in July The number of U.S. temporary help jobs in July was essentially unchanged from June, with a total of approximately 2.23 million jobs, according to seasonally adjusted numbers reported by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. The temporary help penetration rate was also unchanged at 1.70 percent in July. Temporary help jobs had declined in each of the preceding three months. The number of jobs in temporary employment was up 1.1 percent in July on a year-over-year basis, reflecting substantial gains earlier in the year and in the last half of 2010. Index Slips The Conference Board's U.S. employment trends index edged down to a reading of 100.6 in July from June's revised reading of 100.9, the Conference Board announced today. Still, the July figure is up 4 percent on a year-over-year basis. "The employment trends index declined in three of the past four months, and is signaling employment growth of less than 100,000 per month through the end of 2011," said Gad Levanon, associate director of macroeconomic research at The Conference Board. "Despite weak employment growth in recent months, GDP has been growing even slower in the first half of 2011. There is simply not enough growth in production to warrant stronger hiring."
