Yesterday was Equal Pay Day Equal Pay Day was originated by the National Committee on Pay Equity (NCPE) in 1996 as a public awareness event to illustrate the gap between men's and women's wages. The day, observed on a Tuesday in April, symbolizes how far into the year a woman must work, on average, to earn as much as a man earned the previous year. (Tuesday is the day on which women's wages catch up to men's wages from the previous week.) Because women earn less, on average, than men, they must work longer for the same amount of pay. The wage gap is even greater for most women of color. Abrazo Health Care, a health network in Arizona, has selected GreenJobInterview.com to lower both the time and costs associated with interviewing and hiring new personnel. GreenJobInterview.com allows companies to perform their first interviews with potential job candidates via a live virtual interview conducted at a desk, requiring only a Webcam, and costing less than $50. Staples, Inc. is partnering with CareerBuilder and others, offering jobseekers tools and tips to help them in their job hunt. Among the services are free copies of resumes and free business cards through June 13. Online, the company's Career Stimulus Program provides jobseekers help with their resume, networking how-tos, and other job-hunting assistance. Insure.com reported revenues of $4.02 million for the first quarter of 2009, an increase of 1.4 percent from revenues of $3.97 million for the same quarter of 2008. Net income for the quarter was $192,000, or $0.03 per share, compared to a loss of $512,000, or $0.07 per share, for the first quarter of 2008. News from the UK Hitting the ground running future jobs fund open for business Department for Work and Pensions The Government today challenged councils, charities and other organisations to submit innovative bids for funding for new jobs from the £1bn Future Jobs Fund which will create 150,000 new jobs. National sports organisations have already pledged to bid for at least 5,000 jobs for young people, including sports coaches, swimming and fitness instructors, and other active leisure posts. The jobs will help to deliver the Government's Olympic legacy commitments, including offering 5 hours a week of PE and sport for every child. UK Department for Work and Pensions also announced that they are looking at officially recognizing Workers Memorial Day, to commemorate the thousands of people who have been killed, seriously injured or made ill through work. It would also provide an annual focal point for the importance of healthy and safe workplaces. Secretary of State for Work and Pensions, James Purnell has confirmed that a consultation will look at how the Day could be officially recognised in the UK. Couldn't Resist T.G.I. Friday's restaurants announced the launch of nine new sandwiches and salads at nearly 600 restaurants in the U.S. Friday's also announced that all sandwiches and salads, sixteen items in total including the nine new menu items, all full portions, will be offered at an introductory price of $5 beginning today through May 31, 2009.
